New coke ad

I can't decide how I feel about this commercial... while it is a cool concept it does seem a little creepy when the coke starts pouring out of his arm.

- Wieden + Kennedy, Amsterdam

Take a break, take a seat

- JWT, London

A cool form of outdoor advertising that looks good enough to eat!

BBH

"This is New York City", NYC

Amazing art direction. It is so creative and fun and embodies everything New York has to offer. Everyone loves NY and this commercial proves why. It is a city that has so much history and entertainment and BBH successfully showcased what New York can provide to tourists or anyone interested in going there. I love the Ella Fitzgerald song playing along with the commercial as well.

"Barclaycard", London

This put me in the mood for summertime! Very unique idea and crazy concept. The idea is to make things easier to pay and make payments faster. It takes an ordinary man leaving work and traveling throughout the city just to make it home in a perfectly effortless fashion. If only this could happen in real life!

"Smirnoff: Tea Party", New York

YESSS!!! I had no idea BBH did this and it's always been one of my favorite commercials. It's just so ridiculous and great all at the same time. It's pretty catchy. I remember people constantly quoting this and doing their own re-enactments.

"LG Steam Washer", London

This is such a cool way to sell a washing machine. Taking the idea of steam cleaning and blasting it throughout the city is innovative and new. The steam has the effect of polishing coppper, metal, and turning grays back into whites. I really liked it and it was enjoyable to watch. To think that they put in so much effort for a washing machine shows some dedication.

"Levi's: Laundrette", NY

This ad is from the 1950s and announced the arrival of the new Levi's stonewashed jean. I love it-- it's so Grease style with the tight black shirt and ponytail bopping girls. I am a little surprised this could air back then because he strips down to his underwear in front of everyone, but then again Levi's has always done pretty revealing advertisements.

Wieden+Kennedy

"Old Spice"

All of Wieden's "old spice" commercials are really corny and cheesy. This one was semi-funny because there are so many doctor shows on television now so it was all taken with good humor. The sarcasm was flying out of the TV on this one.

"Swing", Tokyo

http://www.advertolog.com/paedia/reels/2007/05/11/505648/

I couldn't ever actually find this one on youtube but if you follow the link the video is on the website. It is an amazing commercial featuring trapeze artists. I have to wonder how they actually went about filming this. Trapeze artists have always been my favorite and it was really cool to watch them switch off partners in mid-air. Cool concept!

"ESPN:Cinderella", New York

That takes some serious guts to mess up a classic Disney movie by placing a Nike shoe in the place of a glass slipper. But it really is a good idea considering Cinderella had to run home. I thought this commercial was extremely clever and fun to watch.

"Nike: Any Other Morning", Tokyo

Wieden uses this concept a lot of normal people meeting up to play basketball games as just a part of their everyday routine. I went to an all girls high school so I can relate to the viciousness of these girls playing basketball! Things get intense... but I liked it and it was unexpected for a group of Tokyo girls dressed in school uniforms to be knocking one another out on the court.

"Nike: Kobe vs. Aston", Portland

This was a web film that Wieden produced featuring Kobe Bryant and Aston Martin. At first I had no clue what was going on and then when he jumped over the car I had a minor freak out moment, but I have to admit that is extremely impressive. It fit the purpose of using NikeAir to jump.

MDC

Agency: Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Boulder
"Diddy says BK is open late"

Ugh. "Diddy" drives me nuts. For one, he's actually not that cool. Two, I'm sorry but you're REALLY not cool if you change your name 56345 times. The point of this commercial is that if Diddy says BK is open late, then everyone will listen and rush to BK for late night. Hm, no thanks.

Agency: VitroRobertson, San Diego
"Taylor"

I think this has a great visual effect. They didn't try to do a commercial with a rockstar rocking out on his guitar or a country singer at a concert. Instead they set up a really nice picture that creates the essence of what a guitar really is. The copy reads "Two worlds. One link between them."

Agency: Cliff Freeman & Partners, NYC
"Quizno's 5 dollars"

This is gross- and there were at least 3 of these, one featuring a guy eating actual dimes. Blah, not appealing!! I did think the Toasty Torpedo commercial for quiznos was funny, but a little too sexual for a simple food chain.

Agency: Kirshenbaum Bond, New York
"Meatatarians Unite"

This was a viral ad done by Kirshenbaum for Wendy's. I like it because there are so many pro-vegetarian ads and campaigns out there and this one supports the meat lovers of the world. After taking advertising literacy I've realized that I really enjoy all the viral ads. They are low-key but it is so interesting to see how quickly they spread throughout the Internet. They cause a great deal of buzz which is great for the advertising agencies and their clients!

BCBG ad

So this isn't exactly the type of advertisements we have been watching in class considering it is for a designer but I thought it was really pretty. I was passing through the mall when I saw it displayed in front of the store.

HAVAS

Agency: Arnold Worldwide, Boston
"Hershey's Off to Work We Go"

Yay for happy commercials! Maybe it's the chocolate lover in me, but I loved this commercial. It's very similar to the Coca-Cola ad where the boy inserts the coin in the machine and it takes you inside the inner-workings of a vending machine. It's all about sharing happiness with Hershey's. The first part reminds me of the show "Unwrapped" on the Food Network because they always show the factories where the food is made. I need to stop watching the Food Network and finding commercials about food apparently...

Agency: Euro RSCG, Bangkok
"Soken DVD"

At first I thought the guy who wasn't talking was trying to put the talking guy on mute because he jumped on the bandwagon about his love for Kill Bill. But at the end I thought it was comical and clever. Nobody likes a messed up DVD that won't work!

Agency: McKinney,Raleigh-Durham
"Gold's Gym"

I wish I had this kind of motivation when I did sit-ups. I think these are high-quality commercials because they are just advertising for a gym. If I saw these I would probably be interested in finding out more about the gym and the services it has to offer.

Publicis

Agency: Publicis,UK
"Cadbury: Flake"

The concept of this commercial is that the girl is so consumed by how great the chocolate is that she does not notice all the rain pouring down. It's an interesting way to sell chocolate and introduce the concept of "flake". I'm not obsessed with this commercial, but it was a good idea and I liked the way they lifted the raindrops up.

Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi, Copenhagen
"Stimorol: Suprisingly Original"

Did this seriously happen?? I'm still in amazement. There are some brave souls out there. All for a pack of gum. I love all the people who are standing around just staring and taking pictures... I bet they didn't think they would get a free stunt show that day. And I love how it doesn't look like a commercial because of the way it is filmed... very cool, 5 extra points for Saatchi.

Agency: Leo Burnett, Tokyo
"McDonald's: Cook"

Haha, a little gross but still funny. The best is when he squirts the windshield wiper water into his mouth at the end. It's different than most of the McDonald's commercials and I'm so happy it doesn't feature the creepy Ronald McDonald clown. But I also loved when he slams on the brakes to send the bacon and eggs flying onto his bread. Pretty hilarious.

Agency: Fallon Worldwide, Minneapolis
"Holliday Inn Express Rap"

Typical white, nerdy guy trying to rap, but he actually does a good job! I mean he put down his dry cleaning and even added his own little hand motions in there... how can you not love him??

Agency: Kaplan Thaler Group, New York
"Swiffer"

I really liked these commercials when they first came out. I know a lot of people think they are lame, which is debatable, but I don't mind them. I think they should try to pick a new song for fear that they might wear out the same idea of the gross broom vs. the new swiffer and the same "BABY COME BACK" song playing over and over again.

Agency: Team One Advertising, Los Angeles
"Come Together"

Very cool art direction. I liked the musical selection as well because it was very light and had an earthy tone to match the changing landscapes in the background. You get the idea that a Lexus is a car you can take anywhere and that it is peaceful, pretty, and relaxing.

Interpublic

Agency: McCann Erickson, Norway
"Bring"

LOVE THIS. Reminds me so much of the TBWA ad for Adidas. Even the guy looks similar to the guy in the TBWA commercial. I love how the room keeps changing and how one thing leads to another.

Agency: The Martin Agency, Richmond
"American Cancer Society:Birthdays"

I needed a feel-good commercial and this one did the trick. Or maybe I am just looking forward to my own birthday next week... either way, I liked this commercial! Is it the most unique thing in the world? Probably not... but it made me feel happy!

Agency: TM Advertising, Irving
"Nationwide Insurance"

Great visual effect. The thought of that paint actually being spilt all over your car would definitely motivate me to get insurance. I think the bright use of neon also helps.

Agency: DraftFCB, Indonesia
"Big Babol:Swing"

There were about 3 or 4 of these that just featured children on playgrounds and swingsets with huge bubblegums for heads. The ultimate goal of gum is to blow the biggest bubble so I think the advertisement gets its point across.

Agency: Lowe, Russia
"Real Beauty: Resolution"

This is obviously a huge parody of the Dove Evolution by Ogilvy. I am surprised that Lowe's agency is allowed to take the exact same idea and recreate it. It's interesting but does not have the same effect of the Dove ad by any means. The main difference is that this is a campaign for Russian men to find "the girl of their dreams".

Agency:Carmichael Lynch, Minneapolis
"Harley Davidson: Parked"

Carmichael Lynch is most famous for their work done for Harley Davidson. I recently had to work on a project for my media class that created a plan for Harley Davidson. They are working on marketing to women so I thought it was extremely interesting that a woman gets on the bike at the end and not a man.

Agency: Hill Holliday, Boston
"Fratalian"

So true. I never tried coffee until this year when I discovered its magic caffeinating powers. I felt like an idiot walking into Starbucks or anywhere else and attempting to put together coffee. There are so many choices now and Dunkin' Donuts successfully hits the mark of making themselves seem easy to understand.

Agency: Deutsch, Los Angeles
"Cici's Pizza"

Cici's is a big client for Deutsch. I am not a personal fan of Cici's, but this commercial is hilarious. I feel like I've done this so many times. Eat the pizza, forget the salad.

Agency: Mullen, Boston
"Boston Bruins: Date"

I guess these would be more humorous if I was a Bruins fan because this commercial received a great deal of positive feedback from fans. Basically it ran a series of commercials to persuade people not to mess with the Bruin bear and to support the team.

Agency:Campbell Mithun, Minneapolis
"AbovetheInfluence"

Good series of print ads. The symbol of the arrow within the circle has become a worldwide symbol for living above the use of drugs. By using teens in their ads, they help to reach teens who are viewing these ads.

Agency: Dailey & Associates, Los Angeles
"Albertson's"

I like this commercial because it's easy to relate to (minus the fact I'm not that old yet), but it brings the basic concept of great food to light. I like how you don't even know it's actually advertising for Albertson's until the very end of the commercial.

Just for kicks

Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi, London
"T-Mobile"

I knew it was going to be a good one when they started off with "Shout"- a classic song at every type of party (wedding reception, dance party, cotillion) or whatever. It's everyone's favorite! Then it just proceeds into other great songs and everyone is just jamming out having a good time. I have to think that this took forever to choreograph but it looked like so much fun, I would have loved to participate in it.

Omnicom

Agency: Martin Williams, Minneapolis
"End Gun Violence"

This is not exactly an uplifting commercial and it's almost hard to watch towards the end once you figure out what is about to happen. Placing the little girl in the ad makes the message much more powerful and heartfelt.

Agency: LatinWorks, Austin
"Active Life Movement"

The tagline on all of these print ads is "Keep obesity away from your child." I think it is smart because the ads are created with childhood figurines. From Barbie to Superheroes, a child looking at this ad would not want their idol to appear fat. Barbie is seen on a laptop with a bag of fries by the bed. Buying a fat Barbie is probably not the first thing a little girl would want to buy. It definitely caught my attention and I think it raises awareness among parents as well.

Agency: GSD&M Idea City, Austin
"The Art of Driving"

I ironically saw this commercial last night at the movie theater. It played right before the previews started and I thought it was so cool while my 2 best friends found it rather annoying. I had no idea that GSD&M created it until I searched for it. I like it because it still showcases the BMW car, but does not have the annoying BUY A BMW feel to it.

Agency: Dieste Harmel & Partners, Dallas
"Runner"

This is another series of commercials that raised awareness of high school dropouts. Dieste partnered with Taco Bell to say that 15% of their gross sales would be donated to help teens graduate. I think this is a really good way to work with other companies as well as promote positive advertising.

Agency: 180 Amsterdam, The Netherlands
"MTV Switch:Green"

I love this because there is a huge obsession with going green and I have to wonder if people even know what that means?? I feel like everything now is labeled GREEN just to make it appeal to those who are trying to be more health-conscience, organic, etc. And sometimes the things that are "green" are not always the best, so this commercial takes a stab at it which I like.

Agency: Goodby Silverstein & Partners,San Francisco
"Frito-Lay Dips: Love & Sockets"

Cheesy, but cute. I think it's interesting how many agencies are incorporating the cartoon aspect into their commercials. I feel this is a very similar look/style to the Coke commercial by TBWA that played in the superbowl. I liked how they used the idea of a socket and lightbulb to relate to chips and dip... Goodby is becoming so metaphorical...

Agency: DDB, Toronto
"Lamato Network: Feature Spotlight #1"

This is a string of very funny commercials that I feel are attempting to make fun of facebook. They are claiming to be the "real" social network. The whole line of ads says things like "request a hug", etc. It does create the idea of social networking vs. reality.

Agency: BBDO, Malaysia
"HotLinks- Cinema"

In light of the current economy, I thought these print ads were hilarious. The main concept is saving money so the boy is sneaking in all of his friends into the theater. The commercial for this advertisement is much better, however, these print ads still do it justice. The mood of the commercial is sneaky and quirky especially with the background music.

Agency: TBWA\NEBOKO, The Netherlands
"Heineken: Walk-in fridge"

This entire concept is ridiculously accurate. Girls would freak out if we walked into that large of a closet, and I would bet that it is almost every boy's dream to walk into a closet full of Heineken. It is a somewhat silly commercial, but it such light humor which I really liked.

WPP Group

Agency: Grey Worldwide
"Pantene Pro-V Anti Breakage Shampoo"

Who doesn't love a little Rapunzel re-do?? This was for Pantene Pro-V and I just love the idea of it. It may seem a little unrealistic, but it definitely works for the "Anti-breakage" shampoo product that is trying to be sold. Especially since drugstore shampoos have a great deal of competition, Pantene is stepping out of the box to attract attention their line specifically which I think is brave and innovative.

Agency: Y&R, Chicago
"Companions for Seniors"

Well, at first glance I was:
A. Depressed at the thought of being that wrinkled one day, but
B. happy because it is a sweet message that advertises in a sensitive way.
This campaign was a public awareness message called "Companions for Seniors". It is about the people of Chicago offering a helping hand. Each ad shows an older, wrinkled hand with a young, fresh hand. I like it because I do not think it disrespects seniors and I feel like it might convince more young people to spend more time with the elderly through volunteer work, etc...

Agency: JWT- Poland
"Converse"

I came across these advertisements for Converse. At first I thought they were a little on the creepy side, but after looking further I thought it was a really creative way to sell a shoe. All the shoes are modeled onto the people in the advertisements as if they were a type of corset or shirt. I also liked it because it is different from the traditional converse ad with the Converse star in white against a black background.

Agency:Ogilvy, Greece
"Cosmote mobile phone"

This reminds me so much of the Honda commercial by Wieden+Kennedy. It is the same concept of people making noises of objects, but I thought the Honda one was better. This is more annoying, but still interesting to watch and I think it's a unique way to sell cell phones.

De Beers, Coca-Cola, and Volkswagen

De Beers
De Beers will forever be associated with the phrase "A Diamond is Forever." Their advertising began when there was a great need to restore the public's feelings about diamonds, since many of their prices had collapsed. The hope was to get N.W. Ayer to convince Americans to buy expensive diamonds.

De Beers began their early advertisements by displaying images that were reminiscent of Picasso. This started the boom of the diamond industry but many people were still in a state of financial distress. Their advertising has changed with each decade. By the time the 70's came around, De Beers advertisements focused more on casuality.
The main similarity between then and now is the emphasis on associating diamonds with love and romance.

These older ads began the start of the phrase "A Diamond is Forever". These are from
1983 and 1975.

These are new advertisements for De Beers created by JWT,New York. Still sticking to the same concept of love, romance, and diamonds.

Coca-Cola

McCann Erickson was responsible for handling the early Coca-Cola advertisements after grabbing the company from D'Arcy.

Recent Coca-Cola work:

- Wieden and Kennedy, Portland

- Mother, London

These are a very different take on Coke compared to the McCann advertisements. The new Coke ads are much more modern and cartoon-like.

Volkswagen

The older Volkswagen ads done by DDB are very simple and recognizable. They have an easy copy to read and understand and still make a statement.

The new Volkswagen work comes from Crispin Porter + Bogusky. It is completely different than anything done by DDB. It is more quirky and in your face than the simple copy ads previously done.

I can't believe it's not butter...

Agency: McCann Erickson Worldwide, New York
"Meet the Buttertons"

My sister made sure to send this one to me. She was watching TV one night and thought it was funny and that I would appreciate it. I think the little boy is my favorite during the 1950s scene. He looks so enthusiastic about the thought of a stick of butter on his potato! Interesting sidenote- this campaign to make healthier choices actually involves an agency called Blackdot located here in Dallas!

Best and Worst of Superbowl 2009

I think the agencies who produced the best commercials were Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, and Saatchi & Saatchi. I really liked the Cheetos spot as well as the "Angry Bosses" spot. I liked this spot because truthfully I never really knew exactly how to pronounce Hyundai so it was informative and humorous at the same time and strayed away from the typical car commercial. The Denny's ad from Goodby was also pretty good compared to most Denny's ads I have seen in the past. I loved the Miller High Life commercials from Saatchi & Saatchi. No one could complain about too many commercials when that one is only one-second!
The agencies I felt did the worst were Campbell Mithun and TBWA and also the in-house agencies who worked on the "Go Daddy" campaign. I usually love the work that TBWA does but I think I was just unimpressed with their Pepsi campaign as well as their Gatorade commercial. It wasn't anything new or exciting.
The one agency that I thought was somewhere in between good and bad was DDB who did all of the Budweiser commercials. Some were entertaining, others were just okay. Again it was the type of campaign that has been done before, but it was not terrible to watch.

WORST

H&R Block: Murray
Agency: Campbell Mithun

I just didn't find anything about this commercial to be creative. The dark figure of death was weird and it seemed like a type of commercial that only Star Wars lovers might be interested in. I did not like the concept of the scary figure warning the man about his taxes. I feel like Campbell could have created something very light-hearted and funny especially with the state of the economy right now.

Pepsi-Max "I'm Good"
Agency: TBWA/Chiat/Day

I'm a supporter of pepsi, but I hate this commercial. I'm not a feminist, but I hate "man" commercials. The tagline at the end saying "The first diet cola for MEN" makes me irritated. Diet Cola has never just been for women and I know plenty of guys who drink diet coke and diet pepsi. Regardless, I also get tired of hearing the "i'm good" after each guy gets hurt in some type of unrealistic situation.

Alec in Huluwood
Agency: Crispin, Porter, + Bogusky

Alec Baldwin should never be the star of any commercial. His reputation among the general public isn't exactly in good standing so I am surprised that Crispin chose to incorporate him as the main actor in their commercial. I was just confused when I saw this commercial and thought it was pretty dumb. Once again, it seems like young boy humor.

BEST

#1: Coca-Cola Heist
Agency: Wieden+Kennedy

Adorable. And maybe commercials aren't supposed to be "adorable", but I really got that whole Disneyworld/fantasy land vibe from this commercial. It was like a bug's life plus real people and coca-cola. The use of different bugs working together to form a team to "heist" this coke was done in an efficient and visual stimulating way. My favorite part is the butterflies forming the actual coke bottle. The concept is simple, but smart. It forms a whole new spin on drinking a coke.

#2 Cheetos "Spoiled Girl"
Agency: Goodby, Silverstein, & Partners

I feel like this is such a relatable commercial. I can think of so many times when I've really wanted to slap/hurt an annoying person around me, and the Cheetos idea is a much better solution! They used the perfect contrast of girls and it was nice to see that old familiar Chester coming back into play.

#3 "Miller High Life"
Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi

Haha. This is my kind of commercial. Short, simple, to the point. The whole point of advertising is to sell or introduce some type of product and this ad gets to the point in 1 second. I love how he just yells at the camera and then it's over. The first time I saw it I had to replay it and do a double-take because it was so unexpected and you're kind of left wondering "Is that it?"

Advertising as Art 4

Agency: Lew'Lara\TBWA, Brazil

This is such a peaceful advertisement. It makes me want to be at the beach immediately. I love the sunlight streaming through the hands and the bright, colorful butterflies resting on the palms. I don't know if I particularly love the copy, but the image itself is great.

Advertising as Art 3

"Sony Bravia:Pyramids"
Agency: Y&R, Asia

Sony Bravia's idea of "colour" is always portrayed in the most interesting and beautiful way. This commercial amazes me each time I watch it. The effect of color is enhanced against the Egyptian sandy brown pyramids. The amount of colorful string used to cover an entire pyramid is unreal. I like how all the bright colors used contrast to the neutral sand to accurately portray Sony's vision of colour. I also love how the threads blast down the pyramid to the beat of the music.

Advertising as Art 2

Agency: Rethink, Vancouver

This ad takes a boring subject of scholarships and transforms it into something cool. The concept is that a black book can win you a full scholarship to Langara's Communication and Ideation Design Program. This is a great ad for all the science gurus out there. I like the way the atomic balls are designed like a sculpture or a tree that is growing out of the tiny black book.

Advertising as Art

"River of Chocolate"
Agency: BBDO, New York

I love this commercial. I think it is art because of the use of color, music and motion. Only one object (the M&M) is used and the colors easily flow from one to the next in a way that is very eye-catching. The waves rumble and evolve with the beat of the laid-back music. It is simple, pretty, keeps the audience entertained, and makes me want to go eat M&M's!
